Two starters in the late 1950s-early 1960s were Devonians Tony Lethbridge and Bernard 'Bronco' Slade. The latter had been a member of the 1939 Crystal Palace motorcycle speedway team.

Tony Lethbridge writes: No.36 was Bernard 'Broncho' Slade of Exeter who rode at Crystal Palace Speedway in, I think, 1939. In the 60's he became a top westcountry kart driver. Here he is in his mauve leathers. At this time he would have been around 60 years of age. The scrutineers condemned his very old crash helmet before practice so he had to buy a full face job before taking to the track!
